FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY —C—

Christmas season is almost over but before we fnally close it, we still have another important feast to celebrate --- the Feast of the Epiphany. And to understand the message is to avoid paying attention to the wrong issues but to focus on the essential elements of the feast specifcally the actors of the story not the star of Bethlehem. The characters of the story are divided into two groups. The frst group is composed of the ‘Wise Men’ from the east. These men were not born and bred within the traditions and beliefs of Israel. They were not part of the chosen people but represented all the non-Jew all over the world. However, they responded to the signs in the heavens marking the birth of a great King and they came to pay him homage. They were flled with delight upon fnding Jesus and they fell on their knees and offered him their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. These gifts were symbols of the kingship of Jesus. Eventually, they obediently responded to the Lord’s warning in a dream about Herod and they returned to their countries by a different way. Part of the second group was Herod, the interpreter of the scriptures and the people of Jerusalem. The story of the joyful and positive response from the wise men was matched by the opposite reaction from those who should have known better. The scribes and the chief priests were the people from whom the wise men asked for information since they knew what the scriptures say about the baby. However, they were not opened to the revelation of God and unwilling to accept it. To whom can we identify ourselves? Can we identify ourselves with the wise men, willing to go out of their comfort zones just to search for the baby Jesus? Or with the other group represented by Herod, the scribes and the chief priests who were full of their own concerns such that they failed to recognize the revelation of God?

This week I want to recognize the stewardship of Mr. Bill Griffth. He has been a parishioner for about 12 years now. Bill has been a faithful steward being a member of the parish choir. FIESTA DE LA EPIFANÍA —C—

La temporada navideña casi ha terminado, pero antes de que fnalmente la cierre, todavía tenemos otra festa importante que celebrar: la Fiesta de la Epifanía. Y entender el mensaje es evitar prestar atención a los temas equivocados, sino centrarse en los elementos esenciales de la festa, específcamente en los actores de la historia, no en la estrella de Belén. Los personajes de la historia se dividen en dos grupos. El primer grupo está compuesto por los "hombres sabios" del este. Estos hombres no nacieron ni se criaron dentro de las tradiciones y creencias de Israel. No formaban parte del pueblo elegido, sino que representaban a todos los no judíos de todo el mundo. Sin embargo, respondieron a las señales en el cielo que marcaban el nacimiento de un gran Rey y vinieron a rendirle homenaje. Se llenaron de alegría al encontrar a Jesús, se arrodillaron y le ofrecieron sus regalos de oro, incienso y mirra. Estos dones eran símbolos del reinado de Jesús. Finalmente, respondieron obedientemente a la advertencia del Señor en un sueño sobre Herodes y regresaron a sus países de otra manera. Herodes, el intérprete de las Escrituras y el pueblo de Jerusalén, formaba parte del segundo grupo. La historia de la alegre y positiva respuesta de los sabios fue igualada por la reacción opuesta de aquellos que deberían haberlo sabido mejor. Los escribas y los principales sacerdotes eran las personas a las que los magos pedían información, ya que sabían lo que dicen las Escrituras sobre el bebé. Sin embargo, no estaban abiertos a la revelación de Dios y no estaban dispuestos a aceptarla. ¿Con quién podemos identifcarnos? ¿Podemos identifcarnos con los sabios, dispuestos a salir de su zona de confort solo para buscar al niño Jesús? ¿O con el otro grupo representado por Herodes, los escribas y los principales sacerdotes que estaban tan llenos de sus propias preocupaciones que no reconocieron la revelación de Dios?

Esta semana quiero reconocer la mayordomía del Sr. Bill Griffth. Ha sido feligrés durante unos 12 años. Bill ha sido un fel mayordomo siendo miembro del coro parroquial. También es parte del grupo de conteo de dinero. En nombre de la comunidad, deseo agradecerle a Bill por todas las cosas maravillosas que está haciendo por nuestra comunidad. Salud.
