17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME — A — This Sunday’s Gospel is the conclusion of Chapter 13th on Matthew’s Gospel which is a series of parables about the Kingdom of Heaven. The frst two are almost identical in terms of their descriptions about the Kingdom of Heaven: the Parable of the Hidden Treasure and the Parable of the Fine Pearl or the Parable of the Merchant. The two parables tell us that we are to place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. We can encounter a wide array of goods in our life. But the Kingdom of Heaven should be the highest good all of us must seek. The Kingdom of God must be the SUMMUM BONUM which is a Latin expression introduced by the Roman Philosopher Cicero which means the highest and ultimate good that which all ethical systems must be based. The third parable, the parable of the dragnet, is a little bit different. While it also talks about the Kingdom of Heaven it is more on the process by which there will be segregation at the end time. The good and the bad will be separated and the good will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. We can ask ourselves with the basic question: “Have I found my Summum Bonum?”
17 DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO — A — El Evangelio de este domingo es la conclusión del Capítulo 13 del Evangelio de Mateo, que es una serie de parábolas sobre el Reino de los Cielos. Los dos primeros son casi idénticos en cuanto a sus descripciones sobre el Reino de los Cielos: la Parábola del Tesoro Escondido y la Parábola de la Perla Fina o la Parábola del Mercader. Las dos parábolas nos dicen que debemos poner todo lo que valoramos al servicio de la búsqueda del Reino de Dios. Podemos encontrar una amplia gama de bienes en nuestra vida. Pero el Reino de los Cielos debe ser el bien supremo que todos debemos buscar. El Reino de Dios debe ser el SUMMUM BONUM que es una expresión latina introducida por el Filósofo Romano Cicerón que signifca el sumo y último bien en el que deben basarse todos los sistemas éticos. La tercera parábola, la parábola de la red barredera, es un poco diferente. Si bien también habla del Reino de los Cielos, se trata más del proceso por el cual habrá segregación en el tiempo del fn. Los buenos y los malos serán separados y los buenos heredarán el Reino de los Cielos. Podemos hacernos la pregunta básica: “¿He encontrado mi Summum Bonum?”
