FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER —C—

Back when I was in the seminary formation, many years ago, I happened to learn about the so-called ‘ACTION-IDENTIFICATION’ which talks about being able to identify the person by his action or demeanor. For instance, we say, most likely that a person could be a teacher, if he or she displays a refned demeanor, someone who is caring and who manifests self-confdence. Similar things can be said of doctors, lawyers and other professionals who display a unique aura of their own. In our Gospel for the ffth Sunday of Easter, Jesus wanted that Christians be identifed by the manner they love one another. He said: “I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples.” True enough, love is the hallmark of Christianity. The kind of love that the Gospel tells us is not the sentimental kind of love, but something that is God-centered and service-oriented. This kind of love was shown in the ‘Washing of the Feet’ that preceded this gospel. It emphasized love associated with service. In our faith community, we are encouraged to show this kind of love where God is refected in the manner we serve others. Let us be faithful stewards by showing our love through the kind sharing of our gifts.

5 DOMINGO DE PASCUA —C—

Cuando estaba en la formación del seminario, hace muchos años, aprendí por casualidad sobre la llamada 'ACCIÓNIDENTIFICACIÓN', que habla de poder identifcar a la persona por su acción o comportamiento. Por ejemplo, decimos que lo más probable es que una persona pueda ser maestra si muestra un comportamiento refnado, alguien que se preocupa y que manifesta confanza en sí mismo. Algo similar se puede decir de los médicos, abogados y otros profesionales que muestran un aura única propia. En nuestro Evangelio del quinto domingo de Pascua, Jesús ha querido que los cristianos se identifquen por la forma en que se aman. Él dijo: “Yo los he amado, así también ustedes deben amarse los unos a los otros. Así conocerán todos que sois mis discípulos.” El amor sufcientemente verdadero es el sello distintivo del cristianismo. El tipo de amor que nos dice el Evangelio no es el tipo de amor sentimental, sino algo centrado en Dios y orientado al servicio. Este tipo de amor se mostró en el 'Lavatorio de los pies' que precedió a este evangelio. Enfatizó el amor asociado con el servicio. En nuestra comunidad de fe, se nos anima a mostrar este tipo de amor donde Dios se refeja en la forma en que servimos a los demás. Seamos mayordomos feles mostrando nuestro amor compartiendo amablemente nuestros dones.
