THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER —C—
Today’s gospel is one of the post Resurrection appearances of Jesus as reported by John. Jesus appeared for the frst time to Mary of Magdala, then to all the Apostles except Thomas. A week later he appeared to them again and this time Thomas is present. Last Sunday’s gospel presented the appearance of Jesus to the disciples who were gathered in a locked room, probably in Jerusalem. Today, they were no longer in Jerusalem but in Galilee because they went back to what they did best, fshing! At this point, the disciples were confused, perplexed and didn’t fully understand what just happened. They had been with Jesus and for three years had been doing ministry with him. Now Jesus is gone! The disciples were having a diffcult time understanding the turn of events. Hence, they decided to go back to fshing. They needed to make a living. Physically, the disciples had to go back to work to earn a living. Unfortunately, they didn’t catch anything the whole night. Until Jesus appeared to them and told them to lower the nets at the right side of the boat and surprisingly enough, they caught a great number of big fsh, 153 all in all. The number which represents the species of fsh in the lake, symbolized the universality of the Church. Spiritually, the disciples were fshing for answers to what they thought to be a mysterious event. Initially, they did not recognize Jesus but slowly they began to know him especially when Jesus invited them to eat breakfast with him. Truly we can a develop strong connection with Jesus only when we are willing to join him in the Eucharist ----- the meal that offers everlasting life.
3 DOMINGO DE PASCUA —C—
El evangelio de hoy es una de las apariciones de Jesús posteriores a la Resurrección según lo informado por Juan. Jesús se apareció por primera vez a María de Magdala, luego a todos los Apóstoles excepto a Tomás. Una semana después se les apareció de nuevo y esta vez Tomás está presente. El evangelio del domingo pasado presentó la aparición de Jesús a los discípulos que estaban reunidos en un cuarto cerrado, probablemente en Jerusalén. Hoy ya no estaban en Jerusalén sino en Galilea porque volvieron a lo que mejor sabían hacer, ¡pescar! En este punto, los discípulos estaban confundidos, perplejos y no entendían completamente lo que acababa de pasar. Habían estado con Jesús y durante tres años habían estado haciendo ministerio con él. ¡Ahora Jesús se ha ido! Los discípulos estaban teniendo difcultades para comprender el giro de los acontecimientos. Por lo tanto, decidieron volver a la pesca. Necesitaban ganarse la vida. Físicamente, los discípulos tenían que volver a trabajar para ganarse la vida. Desafortunadamente, no pescaron nada en toda la noche. Hasta que Jesús se les apareció y les dijo que bajaran las redes del lado derecho de la barca y sorprendentemente pescaron una gran cantidad de peces grandes, 153 en total. El número que representa las especies de peces en el lago, simboliza la universalidad de la Iglesia. Espiritualmente, los discípulos buscaban respuestas a lo que pensaban que era un evento misterioso. Inicialmente, no reconocieron a Jesús, pero poco a poco comenzaron a conocerlo, especialmente cuando Jesús los invitó a desayunar con él. Verdaderamente podemos desarrollar una fuerte conexión con Jesús solo cuando estamos dispuestos a unirnos a él en la Eucaristía ----- la comida que ofrece vida eterna.
