6TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME—A The readings on the sixth Sunday in ordinary time teach us the importance of keeping the commandments. In fact we can only prove that we love God if we keep His commandments. And it is also in keeping His commandments that we grow our relationship with God. The book of Sirach, in the first reading, tells us that keeping the commandments will save us and if we trust in God, we also shall live. We are always confronted with choices like choosing between good and evil, between life and death. Surely, when we choose to keep God’s commandments we choose life because God is life. Remember also that we are what we choose to be. Jesus said in the Gospel: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. I have come not to abolish, but to fulfill.” We must not forget that Jesus is the center of time; he is the end of the Old Testament and the beginning of the new one. Therefore he is the fulfillment of the law and the prophets and in him there is perfection. Before Jesus, the law has so many loopholes. In other words there were many ambiguities, but when Jesus came he perfected and fulfilled it and he even raised the moral standard of people. Understanding the substance of the gospel is to go beyond what the law prescribed. Prior to Jesus we are told “do not kill and whoever kills will be liable to judgment” but with Jesus, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; before Jesus, we were told “you shall not commit adultery”, but with Jesus a lustful look at a woman is already adultery. Truly, adherence to God’s law is the way to wisdom.
6 DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO —A— Las lecturas del sexto domingo del tiempo ordinario nos enseñan la importancia de guardar los mandamientos. De hecho, solo podemos demostrar que amamos a Dios si guardamos sus mandamientos. Y es también al guardar Sus mandamientos que hacemos crecer nuestra relación con Dios. El libro del Eclesiástico, en la primera lectura, nos dice que guardar los mandamientos nos salvará y si confiamos en Dios, también viviremos. Siempre nos enfrentamos a elecciones como elegir entre el bien y el mal, entre la vida y la muerte. Seguramente, cuando elegimos guardar los mandamientos de Dios, elegimos la vida porque Dios es vida. Recuerda también que somos lo que elegimos ser. Jesús dijo en el Evangelio: “No penséis que he venido a abolir la ley y los profetas. No he venido a abolir, sino a cumplir”. No debemos olvidar que Jesús es el centro del tiempo; él es el fin del Antiguo Testamento y el comienzo del nuevo. Por tanto, él es el cumplimiento de la ley y de los profetas y en él hay perfección. Antes de Jesús, la ley tiene muchas lagunas. En otras palabras, hubo muchas ambigüedades, pero cuando Jesús vino, lo perfeccionó y lo cumplió e incluso elevó el estándar moral de las personas. Comprender la sustancia del evangelio es ir más allá de lo prescrito por la ley. Antes de Jesús se nos dice “no mates y el que mate será juzgado” pero con Jesús, quien se enoje con su hermano será juzgado; antes de Jesús se nos dijo “no cometerás adulterio”, pero con Jesús una mirada lujuriosa a una mujer ya es adulterio. Verdaderamente, la adhesión a la ley de Dios es el camino a la sabiduría.
