8TH SUNDAY OF EASTER —A— Last Sunday the seventh Sunday of Easter we celebrated one of the highlights of the season of Easter which is the Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension. This could be a bitter-sweet moment in the lives of the Apostles. It is bitter because the leader of the group is leaving and their story with Jesus concludes. But on the other hand, it is sweet because another advocate has been promised to be sent upon them who will make the abiding presence of Jesus remains with them. This Sunday the whole Church rejoices because we are celebrating the arrival of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. If promises are usually meant to be broken by human then it is different with Jesus because he usually keeps his promises. In fact, today, we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit. This is the day of the fulfillment of the promise Jesus gave his disciples. This is the basic fact affirmed on this feast: He is sent, he comes, he is present and he is at work! Basically, the coming of the Holy Spirit is the birthday of the Church. As the Holy Spirit comes he comes with abundant gifts: unity, tongue and peace. True enough only the Holy Spirit can unite the Church together to speak with the same language and to work with one purpose or mission. Let us not forget what happened in Jerusalem with the disciples and with some devout Jews who came from different regions and nations when they spoke with their own native languages and everybody understood. It means that in the Church we can disregard language difference because we are only called to speak one language: the language of Love!
8 DOMINGO DE PACSUA —A— El pasado domingo séptimo domingo de Pascua celebramos uno de los momentos culminantes del tiempo de Pascua que es la Solemnidad de la Ascensión del Señor. Este podría ser un momento agridulce en la vida de los Apóstoles. Es amargo porque el líder del grupo se va y concluye su historia con Jesús. Pero, por otro lado, es dulce porque se les ha prometido que se les enviará otro abogado que hará que la presencia permanente de Jesús permanezca con ellos. Este domingo toda la Iglesia se regocija porque estamos celebrando la llegada del Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés. Si las promesas generalmente están destinadas a ser rotas por humanos, entonces es diferente con Jesús porque generalmente cumple sus promesas. De hecho, hoy celebramos la venida del Espíritu Santo. Este es el día del cumplimiento de la promesa que Jesús dio a sus discípulos. Este es el hecho fundamental que se afirma en esta fiesta: ¡Él es enviado, viene, está presente y obra! Básicamente, la venida del Espíritu Santo es el cumpleaños de la Iglesia. Cuando el Espíritu Santo viene viene con abundantes dones: unidad, lengua y paz. Es cierto que solo el Espíritu Santo puede unir a la Iglesia para hablar con el mismo idioma y trabajar con un propósito o misión. No olvidemos lo que pasó en Jerusalén con los discípulos y con algunos judíos devotos que venían de diferentes regiones y naciones cuando hablaban en sus propias lenguas nativas y todos entendían. Significa que en la Iglesia podemos prescindir de la diferencia de idiomas porque sólo estamos llamados a hablar un idioma: ¡el idioma del Amor!
