7TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME —A— The message of today’s gospel has something to do with the lesson we learned from last Sunday’s gospel when Jesus said that he came not to abolish the Law and the Prophets, but to fulfill them, which leads his followers to a life of holiness and perfection. Truly when Jesus came he raised the moral standard of the people into a much higher level. Apparently this is what our gospel today wants to tell us where Jesus wants to promote the kind of love that is very radical and even difficult to follow. However if we look deeply we will realize that this is the essence and substance of the Christianity… to love, not only those who love us, but even our enemies. The Old Testament upholds the principle of LEX TALIONIS, which literally means Law of Retaliation from which the principle of ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’ came from. Understanding the principle, we will realize that this is not actually a strict punishment, but in reality it even assures that the excessive punishment is avoided. But for Jesus, we should not seek revenge, instead we offer something good to the person who hurt us. The gospel this Sunday calls us to walk into the road of perfection. And perfection for Jesus is to go beyond what the usual norms dictate. We should love, even our enemies, and pray for those who persecute us; we must also be extra generous, that when we give, we must not do it in minimum, but we must give until it hurts.
7 DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO —A— El mensaje del evangelio de hoy tiene algo que ver con la lección que aprendimos del evangelio del domingo pasado cuando Jesús dijo que no vino a abolir la Ley y los Profetas, sino a cumplirlos, lo que lleva a sus seguidores a una vida de santidad y perfección. Verdaderamente, cuando Jesús vino, elevó el estándar moral de la gente a un nivel mucho más alto. Aparentemente esto es lo que nuestro evangelio de hoy quiere decirnos donde Jesús quiere promover el tipo de amor que es muy radical y hasta difícil de seguir. Sin embargo, si miramos profundamente, nos daremos cuenta de que esta es la esencia y la sustancia del cristianismo... amar, no solo a los que nos aman, sino también a nuestros enemigos. El Antiguo Testamento defiende el principio de LEX TALIONIS, que literalmente significa Ley de Venganza de la que procede el principio de “Ojo por ojo y diente por diente”. Comprendiendo el principio, nos daremos cuenta de que en realidad no se trata de un castigo estricto, sino que en realidad incluso asegura que se evite el castigo excesivo. Pero para Jesús, no debemos buscar venganza, sino ofrecer algo bueno a la persona que nos lastimó. El evangelio de este domingo nos llama a caminar por el camino de la perfección. Y la perfección para Jesús es ir más allá de lo que dictan las normas habituales. Debemos amar, incluso a nuestros enemigos, y orar por los que nos persiguen; también debemos ser extra generosos, que cuando damos, no debemo
