THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME —C— Tax collectors in the time of Jesus were regarded as public sinners because of the nature of their jobs. Tax system was very fraudulent and corruption was rampant because tax collectors charged the people with taxes higher than what was required. This was how they made profit for themselves. Jesus was criticized for associating himself with them who were people despised by the community. He was seen sharing table with tax collectors and sinners something which every Jew never would have done. For the Jews dining with tax collector in the same table meant showing fellowship with them. Zacchaeus who was not simply a tax collector but was a chief tax collector showed a desire for salvation. When he heard that Jesus was passing by he had to climb to a sycamore tree in order to see him. He knew that it would be difficult for him to see Jesus because he was short in stature. But when Jesus looked up he said: “Zacchaeus, come down quickly, I must stay in your house today.” And this is where conversion in the life of Zacchaeus took place. He told Jesus that he was willing to give half of his belongings to the poor, and if he extorted anything from anyone, he was willing to pay them four times over.” Then he won his own salvation from Jesus
31 DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO —C— Los recaudadores de impuestos en la época de Jesús eran considerados pecadores públicos debido a la naturaleza de sus trabajos. El sistema tributario era muy fraudulento y la corrupción era rampante porque los recaudadores de impuestos cobraban a la gente impuestos más altos de lo requerido. Así fue como obtuvieron ganancias para ellos mismos. Jesús fue criticado por asociarse con ellos, que eran personas despreciadas por la comunidad. Se le vio compartiendo mesa con recaudadores de impuestos y pecadores, algo que ningún judío hubiera hecho jamás. Para los judíos, cenar con el recaudador de impuestos en la misma mesa significaba mostrar comunión con ellos. Zaqueo, que no era simplemente un recaudador de impuestos, sino un recaudador principal de impuestos, mostró un deseo de salvación. Cuando escuchó que Jesús pasaba, tuvo que subirse a un sicómoro para poder verlo. Sabía que le sería difícil ver a Jesús porque era bajo de estatura. Pero cuando Jesús miró hacia arriba, dijo: “Zaqueo, baja rápido, debo quedarme en tu casa hoy”. Y aquí es donde tuvo lugar la conversión en la vida de Zaqueo. Le dijo a Jesús que estaba dispuesto a dar la mitad de sus bienes a los pobres, y que si extorsionaba a alguien, estaba dispuesto a pagárselo cuatro veces”. Entonces ganó su propia salvación de Jesús.
