TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME —C— Every time we come to Mass and participate in the Eucharist we surely benefit from it. We are fed with the Bread of Life, the Body of Christ and we listen and learn from His Word. Last Sunday we reflected on the Parable of the rich man and Lazarus from which we were taught about the importance of helping the needy especially on feeding the poor from our own resources. Failure to recognize the needs of others while we have the capacity to help is considered a sin of omission which can lead us to a great punishment in the end. This Sunday we are taught about two things: faith and humble service. In the gospel the Apostles made another request ‘an increase in faith.” To understand what the situation of the Apostles during this time is to remember that at one point they also asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. By asking Jesus to teach them to pray and later for an increase of faith, we can clearly see that their condition as followers of Jesus was not at all easy. They had to face trials in terms of persecutions and rejections from the people that a man of little faith may not be able to endure. Hence, they needed an increase in faith. The Lord told them that faith even the size of a mustard seed can make wonders. It can even uproot a mulberry tree and be planted in the sea. Jesus was strongly pushing his disciples to be strong and persevering. They just have to rely on the fact that they had Jesus with them. Speaking of service, as Christians we are called to serve God and His people. After having accomplished our mission we must not expect for anything in return. We must tell ourselves: “we are unprofitable servants we just did what we ought to do.”
27 DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO —C— Cada vez que venimos a Misa y participamos de la Eucaristía seguramente nos beneficiamos de ella. Somos alimentados con el Pan de Vida, el Cuerpo de Cristo y escuchamos y aprendemos de Su Palabra. El domingo pasado reflexionamos sobre la Parábola del rico y Lázaro de la cual nos enseñaron sobre la importancia de ayudar a los necesitados especialmente en alimentar a los pobres con nuestros propios recursos. No reconocer las necesidades de los demás mientras tenemos la capacidad de ayudar se considera un pecado de omisión que puede llevarnos a un gran castigo al final. Este domingo se nos enseña sobre dos cosas: la fe y el servicio humilde. En el evangelio los Apóstoles hicieron otra petición “un aumento en la fe”. Para entender cuál es la situación de los Apóstoles durante este tiempo es recordar que en un momento ellos también le pidieron a Jesús que les enseñara a orar. Al pedirle a Jesús que les enseñe a orar y luego a aumentar la fe, podemos ver claramente que su condición de seguidores de Jesús no era nada fácil. Tuvieron que enfrentar pruebas en cuanto a persecuciones y rechazos del pueblo que un hombre de poca fe no puede soportar. Por lo tanto, necesitaban un aumento en la fe. El Señor les dijo que la fe, incluso del tamaño de una semilla de mostaza, puede hacer maravillas. Incluso puede arrancar una morera y plantarse en el mar. Jesús estaba animando fuertemente a sus discípulos a ser fuertes y perseverantes. Solo tienen que confiar en el hecho de que tenían a Jesús con ellos. Hablando de servicio, como cristianos estamos llamados a servir a Dios ya su pueblo. Después de haber cumplido nuestra misión no debemos esperar nada a cambio. Debemos decirnos a nosotros mismos: “somos siervos inútiles, simplemente hicimos lo que debíamos hacer”
