TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME —C— Today’s gospel is one those passages that need further explanation. For one, it sounds confusing because it appears that the dishonest manager is being commended for his dishonesty. However, it will be less confusing if we will deal with it from the context of business which stands behind the parable. The manager was dismissed after the owner knew that he was squandering his property. Realizing that he will be jobless he thought of revising the loan agreements with all of his master’s debtors by forgoing the interests and fees stipulated on the loan agreements. On the process he hoped that his security will be enhanced when these debtors reciprocate what he has done to them. He was commended by the owner not because of his dishonesty but by the way he handled difficult situations. Moreover, the gospel outlines a number of lessons that are necessary in our Christian living. We are exhorted to be prudent in dealing with our money. We are reminded that everything is transitory and that money is not the most important thing in this world. Likewise, we are encouraged to be trustworthy and honest. The Lord said that “A person who is honest in small thing is also honest in great thing.” Finally, we must realize that we cannot serve two masters at the same time. It’s either we love the one and hate the other or vice versa. Truly, we cannot serve God if we are fixated with material things.
25 DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO —C— El evangelio de hoy es uno de esos pasajes que necesitan más explicación. Por un lado, suena confuso porque parece que el gerente deshonesto está siendo elogiado por su deshonestidad. Sin embargo, será menos confuso si lo tratamos desde el contexto de negocios que está detrás de la parábola. El gerente fue despedido luego de que el dueño supiera que estaba despilfarrando su propiedad. Al darse cuenta de que se quedará sin trabajo, pensó en revisar los acuerdos de préstamo con todos los deudores de su maestro renunciando a los intereses y tarifas estipulados en los acuerdos de préstamo. Sobre el proceso, esperó que su seguridad se vea reforzada cuando estos deudores correspondan a lo que les ha hecho. El propietario lo elogió no por su deshonestidad sino por la forma en que manejó las situaciones difíciles. Además, el evangelio destaca una serie de lecciones que son necesarias en nuestra vida cristiana. Se nos exhorta a ser prudentes en el manejo de nuestro dinero. Se nos recuerda que todo es transitorio y que el dinero no es lo más importante en este mundo. Asimismo, se nos anima a ser dignos de confianza y honestos. El Señor dijo que “una persona que es honesta en las cosas pequeñas también es honesta en las cosas grandes”. Finalmente, debemos darnos cuenta de que no podemos servir a dos señores al mismo tiempo. O amamos a uno y odiamos al otro o viceversa. Verdaderamente, no podemos servir a Dios si estamos obsesionados con las cosas materiales.
