TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME —C— Meal is one of the most important times in the family setting. More than the intention of feeding the hungry stomachs it is the time where family shares precious time together. It is the time where they exchange pleasantries and experiences within the day. Similarly, Jews regard meals so much that they even focus on the details like “who sits where.” They had sitting arrangement which separated guests in terms of their social class. The rich sit together and the most distinguished one sits at the center. Jesus offers two lessons in the parable. He teaches humility on the part of the invited guests and generosity on the part of the host. To the invited guests Jesus emphasizes the importance of being humble. He exhorts them not to choose a place of honor for it might be reserved for someone more special hence avoiding embarrassment. Instead he tells them to sit at the lowest place where the host may approach them and tell them to sit in a higher place in the dining hall. Likewise Jesus addresses the hosts not to invite his friends, relatives and rich neighbors because they can invite them over in return. Instead invite those who have no capacity to return the favor like the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind. A true Christian does not expect any repayment but he always longs for the reward in the next life.
22 DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO —C— La comida es uno de los momentos más importantes en el entorno familiar. Más que la intención de alimentar los estómagos hambrientos, es el momento en que la familia comparte un tiempo precioso juntos. Es el momento en el que intercambian bromas y experiencias dentro del día. De manera similar, los judíos consideran tanto las comidas que incluso se enfocan en detalles como "quién se sienta dónde". Tenían un arreglo de asientos que separaba a los invitados en términos de su clase social. Los ricos se sientan juntos y el más distinguido se sienta en el centro. Jesús ofrece dos lecciones en la parábola. Enseña humildad por parte de los invitados y generosidad por parte del anftrión. A los invitados, Jesús enfatiza la importancia de ser humildes. Les exhorta a no elegir un lugar de honor porque podría estar reservado para alguien más especial y así evitar la vergüenza. En cambio, les dice que se sienten en el lugar más bajo donde el anftrión pueda acercarse a ellos y les dice que se sienten en un lugar más alto en el comedor. Asimismo, Jesús se dirige a los anftriones para que no inviten a sus amigos, parientes y vecinos ricos porque ellos pueden invitarlos a cambio. En cambio, invite a aquellos que no tienen la capacidad de devolver el favor, como los pobres, los lisiados, los cojos y los ciegos. Un verdadero cristiano no espera ningún pago, pero siempre anhela la recompensa en la próxima vida.
