TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME —C— Every Christian is encouraged to read the Bible. However, it also requires a great amount of diligence because there are passages that are confusing and kind of hard to understand. In times when a certain passage is not clear, then it is better to seek help from the people who know more. Today’s gospel is one of those passages that needs some explanation. It doesn’t make us any less of a Christian if we ask help to understand. In the gospel Jesus said: “He is coming to set the earth on fire and he will not bring peace, but division?” Isn’t he the prince of peace and the one who unites? Three words stand out in today’s gospel namely; fire, division and baptism. We need to dig deeper into these words to be able to know what Jesus really means. Is there any connection between these three words with what is currently going on in the world? True enough there is so much chaos, terror and conflict everywhere, both domestically and around the world. In the Old Testament FIRE has something to do with destruction. Remember what happened in the land of Sodom and Gomorrah when God sent fire to destroy them? But the fire that Jesus mentioned is different. The fire that Jesus brings is the fire that unites, heals and sanctifies. Also, the DIVISION that Jesus mentioned is more of a spiritual battle. It is a division between the enlightened members of the family against those who still remain in sin. Finally, Jesus mentioned the word BAPTISM not because he needed one, but it is the baptism of immersion. He needed to immerse in pain and death in order to complete the mission his Father gave him. He has to suffer and die on the cross in order to set his mission complete.
20 DOMINGO DE TIEMPO ORDINARIO —C— Se anima a todo cristiano a leer la Biblia. Sin embargo, también requiere una gran cantidad de diligencia porque hay pasajes que son confusos y difíciles de entender. En momentos en que un determinado pasaje no está claro, es mejor buscar ayuda de las personas que saben más. El evangelio de hoy es uno de esos pasajes que necesitan alguna explicación. No nos hace menos cristianos si pedimos ayuda para entender. En el evangelio Jesús dijo: “Viene a prender fuego a la tierra y no traerá paz sino división”. ¿No es él el príncipe de la paz y el que une? Tres palabras se destacan en el evangelio de hoy, a saber; fuego, división y bautismo. Necesitamos profundizar en estas palabras para poder saber lo que Jesús realmente quiere decir. ¿Hay alguna conexión entre estas tres palabras con lo que está pasando actualmente en el mundo? Es cierto que hay tanto caos, terror y conflicto en todas partes, tanto a nivel nacional como en todo el mundo. En el Antiguo Testamento, el FUEGO tiene algo que ver con la destrucción. ¿Recuerdas lo que sucedió en la tierra de Sodoma y Gomorra cuando Dios envió fuego para destruirlos? Pero el fuego que Jesús mencionó es diferente. El fuego que trae Jesús es el fuego que une, sana y santifica. Además, la DIVISIÓN que Jesús mencionó es más una batalla espiritual. Es una división entre los miembros iluminados de la familia contra los que aún permanecen en pecado. Finalmente, Jesús mencionó la palabra BAUTISMO no porque lo necesitara sino porque es el bautismo de inmersión. Necesitaba sumergirse en el dolor y la muerte para cumplir la misión que su Padre le encomendó. Tiene que sufrir y morir en la cruz para poder completar su misión.
