PENTECOST SUNDAY —C—
What many people say ‘promises are made to be broken’ is a cliché but in many cases it true. But definitely it’s different when it’s Jesus who made the promise because surely he keeps it. He is someone who is firm in his words. Jesus’ resurrection took place fifty days ago. After a while he disappeared from the sight of his Apostles. Before he left, he told them: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes down on you; then you are to be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8). Today we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit. This is the day of the fulfillment of the promise Jesus gave us. This is the basic fact affirmed on this feast: He is sent, he comes, he is present and he is at work. The coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost is also the birthday of the Church therefore technically speaking today is the founding anniversary of the Catholic Church established upon the Apostles. We are called to belong to a community and to participate in the redemptive mission of the Church. In the Gospel, He, the Risen Lord, empowered His disciples with the Holy Spirit, and sent them on a mission. Empowerment is from above and it is meant to be shared. “Peace be with you!” This is the Lord’s assurance to us who are called and sent on a mission. In spite of our unworthiness and inadequacies the Lord tells us to be at peace and not to worry about so many things. Let us firmly focus on the mission and believe that the presence of the Holy Spirit is always with us.
DOMINGO DE PENTECOSTÉS —C—
Lo que mucha gente dice 'las promesas están hechas para romperse' es un cliché pero en muchos casos es cierto. Pero definitivamente es diferente cuando es Jesús quien hizo la promesa porque seguramente la cumple. Es alguien que es firme en sus palabras. La resurrección de Jesús tuvo lugar hace cincuenta días. Después de un tiempo desapareció de la vista de sus Apóstoles. Antes de irse, les dijo: “Recibiréis poder cuando el Espíritu Santo descienda sobre vosotros; entonces seréis mis testigos…” (Hechos 1:8). Hoy celebramos la venida del Espíritu Santo. Este es el día del cumplimiento de la promesa que Jesús nos dio. Este es el hecho fundamental afirmado en esta fiesta: es enviado, viene, está presente y obra. La venida del Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés es también el cumpleaños de la Iglesia, por lo tanto técnicamente hablando hoy es el aniversario de la fundación de la Iglesia Católica establecida sobre los Apóstoles. Estamos llamados a pertenecer a una comunidad ya participar en la misión redentora de la Iglesia. En el Evangelio, Él, el Señor Resucitado, empoderó a Sus discípulos con el Espíritu Santo y los envió a una misión. El empoderamiento viene de arriba y está destinado a ser compartido. "¡La paz sea con vosotros!" Esta es la garantía del Señor para nosotros que somos llamados y enviados a una misión. A pesar de nuestras indignidades e insuficiencias, el Señor nos dice que estemos en paz y que no nos preocupemos por tantas cosas. Enfoquémonos firmemente en la misión y creamos que la presencia del Espíritu Santo está siempre con nosotros.
